Live in Dongara or Port Denison and need an auto electrician? This coastal town sits in the Shire of Irwin rather than the City of Greater Geraldton, and between crayfishing boats, Brand Highway traffic and farm vehicles, the work here has its own mix.

Common auto electrical jobs in Dongara

Dongara is the seat of the Shire of Irwin, a little over 60 km south of Geraldton at the mouth of the Irwin River, with Port Denison right beside it. Fishing, farming, a small oil and gas industry and highway travellers all bring work.

Port Denison boats

Port Denison is home port to commercial lobster fishers, and its marina and boat ramp off Point Leander Drive are busy with recreational boats too. Trailers that go in the water week after week need lighting and wiring that can handle salt. Sealed LED lights, tinned wire and a plug kept above the waterline make a real difference. If you're starting from scratch, our guide on how to wire a 7-pin trailer plug covers the basics.

Caravans on Brand Highway

Dongara sits on Brand Highway, and Indian Ocean Drive joins the highway just south of town at Arrowsmith. That brings a steady flow of caravans and campers, and some arrive with towing problems: dead indicators, brakes that aren't working, or a van battery that won't charge. Electric brake controllers need setting for the load, and charging over a long cable needs the right setup. See why isn't my caravan battery charging while towing.

Farm utes off Midlands Road

Midlands Road ends at Brand Highway in Dongara after running in from the farming towns to the east, and farm vehicles come into town for supplies and repairs. Farm utes take a hammering on gravel and paddocks, so loose terminals, chafed looms and failed lights are common. Mice in sheds can also chew wiring. Our guide to rodent damage to car wiring explains what to look for.

Coastal corrosion in town

Much of Dongara and Port Denison is close to the water, and cars parked near the beach or the harbour face the same salt problems as boats. Battery terminals, earth straps and exposed plugs are the usual trouble spots. Corrosion on terminals can stop a car starting even with a good battery. A regular look under the bonnet, a clean of any white or green build-up, and a protective spray on terminals will help keep things reliable.

Dongara auto electrical questions

Is Dongara part of the City of Greater Geraldton?

No. Dongara is the seat of the Shire of Irwin, a separate local government area south of the City of Greater Geraldton. Port Denison sits beside it and is part of the same shire. Plenty of people still travel between Dongara and Geraldton for work, shopping and services, so the two are closely linked.

My caravan brakes aren't working properly. Can I fix it on the road?

Start by checking the brake controller settings, the plug and the earth, because those are the most common causes. If the controller shows no trailer connected, the plug or wiring is the likely problem. If you can't find the fault, don't keep towing a heavy van without working brakes. Get it checked before you go further.

Local tip for Dongara

If you launch at Port Denison, keep a small tube of dielectric grease and a spare globe or two in the car. A dab of grease on the plug pins before each trip keeps salt water out, and having spares means a blown light doesn't end your day. Rinse the trailer with fresh water once you're home, not the next morning.
