Geraldton is the Mid West's port city, about 424 km north of Perth, and the service centre for the region's farms, mines and fishing fleet. Auto electrical work here runs from salt-affected boat trailers to grain trucks, mine utes and touring 4WDs heading north.

Suburbs in Geraldton

This area takes in three quite different places in the City of Greater Geraldton, plus Dongara to the south, which sits in the neighbouring Shire of Irwin. Geraldton itself holds the CBD, the foreshore, the Batavia Coast Marina and the port, which ships iron ore, grain and mineral sands. Webberton and Narngulu are the industrial side, with workshops, transport yards, a rail depot and processing plants. Dongara and Port Denison are a coastal town and fishing harbour on Brand Highway. So a job might be a corroded trailer plug one day and a 24V lighting fault on a road train the next.

Common auto electrical jobs in Geraldton

These are the jobs that come up most often across Geraldton and the towns around it.

Salt air and afternoon wind

Geraldton is a windy coastal city. The Bureau of Meteorology's long-term averages for Geraldton Airport put the mean 3pm wind speed in January at around 31 km/h, and that sea breeze carries fine salt spray inland. Over time it gets into exposed plugs, earth points, light housings and battery terminals. Green crusty terminals and lights that work one day and not the next are common signs. Our guide on cleaning corroded battery terminals covers the basics.

Grain, ore and road trains

Geraldton–Mount Magnet Road is regularly used by mine and grain road trains, and trucks also feed the port and the Narngulu industrial area from Brand Highway and the north. Long-haul rigs run 24V systems with plenty of trailer plugs, marker lights and connections that take a beating from heat, dust and vibration. Many faults come back to a poor earth or a chafed loom. A spare set of globes, fuses and a test light in the cab can save hours on the side of the road.

Boat trailers and crayfishing

Fishing is part of life here. The Batavia Coast Marina has a three-lane public boat ramp, and Port Denison near Dongara is home port to commercial lobster boats as well as a busy recreational ramp. Boat trailers get dunked in salt water, so lights, plugs and wiring corrode quickly unless they're sealed and rinsed. Submersible LED lights and a sealed plug make a big difference. Start with why aren't my trailer lights working.

Touring and work vehicles heading north

Geraldton is the last city on the coast before the long run up North West Coastal Highway, where Carnarvon is the only large town before Karratha. Travellers and workers set off from here with fridges, lights and radios, so dual battery systems, DC-DC chargers and solid wiring are common jobs. Newer vehicles with smart alternators usually need a DC-DC charger rather than a plain isolator. See DC-DC charger or isolator before you buy.
